That said, whether Povetkin has in fact improved his tactics for fighting larger men since the Klitschko defeat remains a difficult question to answer.
This is a fighter who lost seven of amateur bouts and eventually avenged all seven. He is an Olympic champion with proven power who is currently riding an eight fight win streak.
But all things considered, Povetkin does represent a potentially serious threat to the Briton. It may well prove a serious challenge for the young champion, but if Joshua can prevail, particularly in impressive fashion, then the way may be cleared for the big battle we all really want to see.
But that said, the way was already clear, was it not? Mandatory defenses are routinely side-stepped and Wilder was clearly ready, willing and able to face Joshua months ago.
So what does a win over Povetkin at this juncture prove? Israel Gonzalez. Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez. Alex Saucedo vs.
Arnold Barboza. Emanuel Navarrete vs. Ruben Villa. Charles Conwell vs. Wendy Toussaint. Joshua Buatsi vs.
Marko Calic. Jose Zepeda vs. Ivan Baranchyk. Jermall Charlo vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Jermell Charlo vs. Sporting News had the fight scored for Povetkin at the time of the stoppage.
My ultimate goal was to be victorious tonight. That goal was accomplished, but not without a shaky start. During the seventh round, Joshua , 21 KOs had a new sense of confidence.
He buckled Povetkin with a blistering right hand. Sensing he could put him away, the champ unleashed a thunderous right hand to send Povetkin to the canvas.
The fight appeared to be over as Povetkin almost fell out of the ring. Joshua immediately pounced on the opportunity.
He blasted Povetkin with a series of left hooks and another vicious right hand that vanquished his opponent for good, prompting the ref to stop the fight.
What is next for Joshua? That's it. Before talks for an undisputed heavyweight title fight can begin, Wilder needs to beat lineal champion Tyson Fury on Dec.
If that happens, then the fighters can continue on their collision course. Joshua's best round of the fight, but he's still throwing one shot at a time.
He's looking for the home run. He needs to put shots together and make Povetkin respect him because right now he doesn't. It's getting to the point that Joshua needs to think about abandoning the jab and letting it all hang out.
All about activity here. Joshua did cut Povetkin with a right and started to use the jab more effectively. The combinations are giving Joshua fits every time he starts to get going.
Great game plan thus far for Povetkin. Being stripped of the WBA belt would torpedo the chance of Joshua and Wilder meeting for the chance to become undisputed world heavyweight champion and the holder of all four major titles.
Leaving aside all the bickering and claims as to who was to blame for Joshua-Wilder not being made next for October or November, Joshua needed to make an announcement in order to keep hold of the WBA belt.
The WBA had already granted Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn an extra month to negotiate with Povektin and Wilder before demanding a resolution with "with immediate effect" on June But Povetkin will still be Joshua's most significant opponent after Wladimir Klitschko, the former world No 1 who the Briton knocked out last year.
Povetkin challenged Klitschko in October and lost a heavy points decision to the Ukrainian after suffering four knockdowns. Joshua will still start a red-hot betting favourite after signing for a fight that gives him the chance to keep hold of all the titles, rather than lose one before he gets into the ring.
Just as Joshua is looking to take care of his mandatory challenger next, Wilder may now do the same against Dominic Breazeale.
Breazeale, 32, suffered his first professional defeat by stoppage to Joshua two years ago and since registered stoppage wins over Izu Ugonoh and Eric Molina in a WBC title eliminator on Wilder's undercards.
It is a fight that can be marketed well too after the two Americans clashed in a hotel lobby last year. Don't give up hope yet of seeing Joshua face Wilder -- just see their next fights as part of the process for it being made.
A clash with American Wilder , 39 KOs , 32, would be the first for all four major world heavyweight titles and is the biggest fight in boxing waiting to be made.
